Most of a day. The site covers a reconstructed township, an underground mine tour, gold panning in the creek and regular street performances, and each of those absorbs more time than expected. The most common mistake is treating it as a short stop on the way to somewhere else; if your plan includes Sovereign Hill and something else substantial, one of them gets cut short.
It is one of the strongest options near Melbourne for school-age children, because almost everything on the site is something to do rather than something to read. Panning for gold in the creek holds attention longest, and children keep whatever they find. The site is large, mostly unsealed and sloping, so it is easy for a seven-year-old and hard work with a pram.
