There are two ways to price a day trip out of Melbourne, and they behave completely differently. A coach sells you a seat, so the cost multiplies by the number of people. A private operator sells you the vehicle, so the cost divides. For one or two people the coach wins on price by a wide margin. For a full vehicle the difference per person is small, and what it buys is your own route. This is how the sum works.
How much is a seat-in-coach day tour from Melbourne?
Coach day tours are sold per seat, so the cost scales directly with the size of your group. Prices change by operator and season, so check the current price with the operator. A seat on our own Saturday Great Ocean Road small-group tour, at most eleven guests rather than a coach, is A$179 for an adult, and the sums below use it.
A coach seat buys a fixed route, a fixed set of stops with fixed durations, an early departure from a city pickup point, and a large coach shared with everybody else who booked. For one or two people it is hard to beat on price.
How much is a private vehicle for the same day?
Our long-day rate starts at A$1,199 for the vehicle rather than per person, with shorter days from A$749. The written total is confirmed after we check the route, the party and the date.
The important structural difference is not the number, it is that the figure is for the vehicle in party bands: up to four guests pay one figure, five to seven the next, and on the longest days a group of eight or more pays per person. Within a band it is one vehicle, one price, split however you like among the people in it.
How does the gap change with group size?
It narrows steadily. For two people a seat is far cheaper. With four in one vehicle the long-day rate is about A$300 each, against A$179 for a seat, and from eight guests the private long day is A$175 per person, for your own vehicle, stops and timing.

The seat figures are our Saturday adult price (A$179) multiplied out; a child seat is A$149. The private figures are the published long-day starting rates, confirmed in writing for your date. The pattern is the point: for a small group a seat is the cheaper ticket, and the gap closes as the group grows.
What does the comparison miss?
Price alone understates the difference, because the two products are not the same thing sold at different rates.

- A coach leaves when it leaves. A private vehicle leaves when your group is actually ready.
- Stops
- Coach stops are fixed in place and length. If you want forty minutes at Loch Ard Gorge and none at the gift shop, that is available to you.
- Door to door
- A coach picks up from a city point. A private vehicle collects from where you are staying, which matters with luggage, children or limited mobility.
- Who you travel with
- The vehicle carries the people in your booking.
What makes a private quote go up?
Reserved time, distance, party size and date. A longer day, a larger vehicle or a peak date is quoted higher, and the total is confirmed in writing before anything is booked.
There is no benefit to us in a vague number, so the quote states the agreed route, the reserved time, what is included and what is not. Tolls and parking on the agreed route are covered by us rather than added afterwards. Paid entries are booked by you unless your written quote lists them, and meals are yours.
