The honest answer is yes, with a caveat that most itineraries skip over. The Great Ocean Road is 243 kilometres long before you have driven a single kilometre back towards Melbourne. A day trip covers the good half of it properly, or all of it badly. The first is a much better day.
How long is the Great Ocean Road?
The road runs 243 km between Torquay and Allansford on Victoria's south-west coast. It was built by returned servicemen between 1919 and 1932 and is the world's largest war memorial.
Torquay itself is already about 100 km from Melbourne. So the moment you reach the official start of the road, you have driven for over an hour and have the entire length still ahead of you. That single fact explains why so many one-day itineraries feel rushed.
What can you realistically fit into one day?
Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles and back is comfortably achievable in a day. Continuing west past Port Campbell to Warrnambool and back is not, unless the day becomes mostly driving.
A day that works looks roughly like this: out along the coast through Torquay, Aireys Inlet and Lorne, on through Apollo Bay and the Otways, reaching the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge in the afternoon, then home inland via Colac.
A day that does not work tries to add Warrnambool, the Bay of Islands, or the Grampians. Each of those is a good destination. None of them belongs on the same day as the Twelve Apostles.
Should you drive it yourself or take a tour?
It depends almost entirely on group size and on who would be driving. The road is not technically difficult, but it is long, winding, and tiring at the end of the day.
- Driving yourself
- Cheapest for one or two people and completely flexible. The driver sees less of the coast than everyone else, and does the return leg tired.
- Seat-in-coach tour
- Around $145 a person at the time of writing. Fixed route, fixed stops, fixed departure. Good value alone or as a pair.
- Private vehicle and driver
- One price for the whole vehicle, so it divides by the group rather than multiplying. Your own stops and your own timing. Overtakes the coach on cost somewhere around six to eight people.
The break-even point is worth knowing before you book anything. Four people on a coach is roughly $580 and four in a private vehicle is more. Ten people on a coach is roughly $1,450, and ten in a private vehicle is less. The arithmetic changes hands in the middle, and a lot of families sit right at that crossover without realising it.
What is the best direction to drive it?
West from Torquay, so the ocean is on your left and every lookout is a left turn directly into the car park rather than a crossing of oncoming traffic.
This sounds like a small thing and it is not. Driving east to west puts you on the seaward side of the road for the entire length. On a busy summer weekend, that alone removes a great deal of friction from the day.
What about the weather?
The coast makes its own weather and it changes fast. A clear morning in Melbourne is not a forecast for Apollo Bay, and nobody can promise otherwise.
This matters most for anyone planning around photographs. The stacks in flat grey light look nothing like the postcards, and that is outside everybody's control. Bring a layer more than you think you need, even in February.
